Shopping can sometimes feel like a guilty pleasure, especially for those of us who are trying to reduce our impact on the environment. Of course, the best thing we can do is to cut down on our consumption, and with a world of antiques at our fingertips, there has never been a better time to buy second-hand. But sometimes this isn't possible: that antique sofa might need recovering, or a side table may be begging to be topped with a new light.
Paint, is of course, something that can't be bought second hand, and even the most environmentally-conscious person might want fresh sheets for their bed. Fear not, there are still other ways to decorate your house with the planet in mind. We've selected a collection of products from List members that are not only stylish but environmentally conscious, too. The variety of cushions, rugs, and blankets in this round-up, for example the lovley 'Albee' fabric from Yarn Collective and the Roger Oates' Penrose rug, come from brands that champion the use of recycled and responsibly sourced materials, and many contemporary furniture and appliance companies, like Sub-Zero & Wolf, Molteni&C and Lema, now have sustainability statements on their websites where you can learn more about the efforts they are making to create energy-efficient appliances. House of Hackney is also no stranger to prioritising the environment; the company partnered with the World Land Trust to safeguard endangered forests, and is turning to FSC-certified wood pulp for the production of its (printed to order, and therefore zero-waste) wallpaper. This led to the company winning House & Garden's Responsible Design Award in 2024.
