A shepherd's hut in rural Dorset perfect for getting away from it all

Charlotte McCaughan-Hawes enjoys a rural retreat for a modern traveller in the tranquil surrounds of Aller Dorset
Aller Dorset

The days drift by hazily in the rolling Dorset Hills, with practically no need to leave Aller at all. There are breakfast hampers you can order, filled with everything needed for a fry up, or salmon smoked on the farm by Cat’s father-in-law, or locally made yoghurt and granola made by Cat herself. Local catering business Flames and Feasts can be booked to come and cook over the coals of your fire pit for you, while you sit on the loungers under a jaunty Business & Pleasure parasol and watch the geese while sipping a cocktail whipped up from the contents of the honesty bar. There’s even a laminated map of the village with footpaths handily marked in red, so guests can make the most of the surrounds without getting lost in the woods. It’s a very local affair; even the Black Cow vodka on the bar cart comes from down the road as does the Conker gin and the freshly baked bread too comes from the neighbouring ‘Wobbly Cottage’. The tea and coffee don’t travel far, coming from Carbon Neutral Drinks, a company which is based up the road, while the skincare products are from Enchanted Plant on the Wiltshire Dorset border and are all made from British ingredients.

Aller Dorset is precisely the post-pandemic holiday that will wash away the anxiety we've all struggled to keep at bay over the last year and make you consider whether it might really be time to make the move to the countryside. Arriving back there after a day of walking the Jurassic Coast, touring local award-winning vineyard Langhams and eating at one of the many brilliant restaurants and pubs nearby feels like taking a huge exhale as you settle in to a sunset bath outside before sitting by the fire and contemplating the view.
