A charming boutique hotel on a hidden Greek island

Athina Kontos revels in the quiet life on the Aegean island of Syros, with the stylish surrounds of Hotel Aristide as her base

If you wanted, each day at Aristide could be wildly different. Ermoupoli town is just a short walk down the cobbles, and the impulse to happily lose oneself in streets of boutiques, cafes and ceramic shops, is definitely there… and very much welcome. But for something more interactive, Oana and her team have got all bases covered. One afternoon, we hike up to the village of Episkopio, walking stony paths lined with wild fennel and mustard flowers, working up an appetite for an evening class of aubergine rolling and parsley chopping, with Syros cook Elisa Mavropoulou.

A day later, a typically speedy Greek taxi ride takes us to the North of the island, where we find ourselves at a lunch table in the garden of Kostas Prekas. Kostas–a local foodie entrepreneur, passionate horticulturist and owner of Prekas delicatessen–has arranged a ‘picnic’ (bountiful feast) style lunch for us at his home, cooked with Aristide’s resident Head Chef Petros Braikidis. The pair are nothing short of a dynamic duo, grilling lamb and cauliflower over a roaring open flame, picking fresh artichokes from the garden and salting them at our rose-petal sprinkled table. It’s dreamy and warm, and by the end we all need a nap.

The evenings at Aristide are gentle, and dinners of Petros’ island-centric, tasting menu creations are served on the roof terrace. His eagerness to accommodate reflects the ethos and heart of the hotel’s whole setup. No single dietary requirement is too much of an ask, and if you fancied a second plate of fava and caper leaves from the meticulously orchestrated array of starters, you could absolutely have it. Local wines from the Ousyra Winery are paired with dinner, and a steady flow of heavenly botanical cocktails manifest at the hands of the hotel’s own mixologist Konstantinos Kostopoulos–sage syrup and tonka beans in abundance.

The attention to detail is admirable on all fronts. For cool evenings outside, there are giant blankets. Arriving in your inbox a few days ahead of check in, a comprehensive list of amenities with items you might want to leave at home. Even the room keys hold a little token of marble to match the decor in each bedroom. Despite typically receiving fewer travellers than some of its Cycladic brothers and sisters, Syros sure knows how to welcome guests.
