Sebastian Bergström's Stockholm apartment is packed full of riotous colour and space-saving tricks that could make even the smallest of homes feel like a welcoming expanse.
Gravitating towards bold patterns and unexpected paint combinations, Sebastian's house subverts the meaning of what ‘Scandinavian’ interiors are prophesied to be. He has banished bland neutrals in pursuit of a more intense and brilliant aesthetic. But what are the pieces that make Sebastian's house seem so inviting? Of course, many of them are vintage pieces, sourced and repainted by Sebastian himself. But fear not; we've done some digging to find the pieces that can be shopped, so you can add them to your house without too much trouble.
In the living room
In Sebastian's living room, colourful cushions act as mini artworks, adding splashes of vibrancy against the plainer walls. All thrown together in careful disarray, cushions can be a brilliant injection of colour in a house. Most of Sebastian's cushions are from Swedish brand Chhatwal & Jonsson. However, similar plain linen cushions can be purchased at Arket, Soho Home and John Lewis.
On the coffee table, a small rattan basket provides a place for books, candles and TV remotes. A similar one is available from Matilda Goad & Co. In the background, a tall vase is a stylish home for greenery and flowers.
At the table
To create a focal point on top of the dining table, Sebastian has picked a hobnail vase filled with flowers. On the wall, a mixture of posters in contrasting bold frames bring colour to the white walls.
On the bench, Sebastian has used a sheepskin rug in lieu of a throw or extra cushion. Not only does this add texture to the white seat cushion, but it also helps to protect the fabric from wear and tear in the long run. See John Lewis for a similar piece. By the window
Looking for a quick way to change up the feel of a room? There is no faster way than hanging a new pair of ready made curtains. Caravane are known for their stylish French products and, as Sebastian has discovered, their curtains are particularly handsome.
On the far wall, blue and white dishes are displayed in an eclectic mix. Sebastian's are vintage, but it is not difficult to recreate this look with a few dishes from some of the best furniture shops, like the collection we have found below from Soho Home.
In the hallway
This vignette in the hallway provides a beautiful focal point from the moment you walk in the door of Sebastian's apartment. To create more storage, he has opted for a chest of drawers, rather than just a console table, which traditionally would have very little storage underneath. Whilst the exact piece is a bolder green, we've found a similar option from John Lewis that could be sanded down and painted. A glass lamp sits atop the drawers, undoubtedly brightening up wintry Stockholm evenings.
Above it, a hallway mirror creates depth and tricks the eye into seeing a bigger space. For decoration, Sebastian has added a decorative plaster piece, filled with flowers. A similar effect could be created with Jess Wheeler's mushroom wall bracket. Alongside it a cheerful plate with a mushroom motif is displayed.
In the kitchen
Sebastian's kitchen is filled with an eclectic selection of pots, jugs, mugs and utensils. He credits most of them to The Cook's Atelier, where he suggests you can find, “a lot of lovely pieces like mine: things like vintage bowls, copper pans.” Instead of hiding his utensils away in drawers, he makes them into a decorative feature, proudly housing them in white stoneware pots.
In the bedroom
Sebastian's bedroom may be a more cosy space than most, but he's made it into a welcoming and inviting area. Behind the bed, two sweet lampshades echo the plant they flank, adding pops of colour with their floral motifs. Similar lampshades are available at Svenskt Tenn and Minnie-Mae Stott.
At the doorway, a tall candlestick displays a decorative green candle and one of Bordallo Pinheiro's famed cabbage plates sits atop a pile of books.
Down the corridor
In the far hallway there is a star ornament, likely from Afroart, that draws the eye upwards. Afroart specialise in paper artworks like this one and they are a charming, affordable alternative to rewiring a new ceiling light in. Though not as large as the one in Sebastian's hallway, Arket have a few smaller pieces available. Alternatively, if you like the look of the star, but are in the market for a light, Pooky have some very smart star pendant lights that are perfect for hallways (we like the Stella Pendant Light best). Next to the TV, a sculptural lamp doubles as an ornament when not in use.
In the bathroom
In his bathroom, Sebastian has added smart yellow panelling to create a cosier feel. Elsewhere, bright lampshades add colour and a sense of fun to the tiled walls. Similar lampshades can be purchased for Svenskt Tenn and are available in a range of materials. On the bathroom cabinet, a clam shell from Matilda Goad & Co is both a decorative and practical addition.
To add texture and colour to the space, Sebastian has incorporated striped towels in a few different designs. Similar bath towels can be found on John Lewis.
