Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Chatsworth Christmas market. For over 20 years Chatsworth House – the historic home of the Devonshire family in Derbyshire – has marked the festive season with an elaborate decoration display for the general public, and in more recent years an outdoor Christmas market where you can buy handmade gifts and mulled cider.
A steadfast symbol of Englishness and setting for adaptations of Pride & Prejudice, Chatsworth has looked to the ‘Palace of Advent’ as its theme. Just like your favourite advent calendar, this year's theme is a countdown to the big festive day. Find 24 rooms filled with ‘Christmas wonder and the sights, sounds and scents of the season’. Expect Christmas decoration at its most extra, with archways adorned with candy canes, handmade Christmas stockings and mistletoe, a winter wonderland and glittering Christmas tree brooch forest. Chatsworth's gardens will also be illuminated with light and accompanied by sounds, including at the historic Cascade, a 24-step waterfall that epitomises the grand stature of the gardens themselves.
The market itself is a feast for the eyes, with over 100 market stalls selling decorative wares and gifts alongside live music, outdoor bars serving mulled wine and German beers and food stalls with burgers, sausages, hot pork rolls, pancakes, churros and more.
Kids will have plenty to keep them occupied. At the heart of the house, you’ll find Father Christmas’ workshop. They'll be able to make a Christmas wish to hang on Wish Trees and stir a giant Christmas pudding pot.
Art enthusiasts will also be thoroughly catered to, with decorations from the Devonshire Collections, including ecclesiastical paintings by Luca Giordano, Salvator Rosa and Paolo Veronese. British artists have also been commissioned to craft new works for the experience, such as fine artist Bethan Maddocks and digital artist Leavon Archer.
What date is the Chatsworth Christmas market 2023?
While the ‘Palace of Advent’ runs from 4 November 2023 until 7 January 2024, Chatsworth's Christmas market runs for less time – only open from 4 November 2023 until 26 November. So be sure to time your visit accordingly if you're hoping to visit. Tickets to the market alone will not allow access to the Palace of Advent, but Palace of Advent tickets will allow entry to the market. For more information and tickets visit the Chatsworth website.
