When Keith Johnson and Glen Senk sought a second home in Italy, their search led them to Tuscany, where a farmhouse awaited their charming restoration. Informed by traditional and local aesthetics, the pair used salvaged finds and antiques sourced nearby to breathe new life into this rural idyll.
A former mill conversion reconfigured into a coherent, flowing space
Set amid a steep-sided valley in Wiltshire, this former mill was converted into a living space in the 1990s. Nonetheless, it retained a frustrating floorplan which made moving through the building difficult. Enter architects David Liddicoat and Sophie Goldhill, who rose to the challenge with gusto on behalf of their client.
A handsome country house spanning 400 years reimagined by Salvesen Graham
A sprawling country house in Hampshire presented designers Nicole Salvesen and Mary Graham with at least three distinct periods of design and expansion: in the early 17th, mid 19th and late 20th centuries. “Each period was noticeably different,” says Nicole. “Dark, low ceilings next to very light spaces; there were rooms that felt like cottages.” She and Mary set about creating a sense of harmony within the house, and the result was fresh, layered, comfortable and distinctly English.
A rented Oxfordshire cottage vivified on a tight budget in two weeks
Undaunted by a tight budget and a two-week timescale, the artist turned interior designer Josh Hale worked wonders on his rented Oxfordshire cottage, helped by his eye for a bargain and his understanding of colour, texture and proportion. After “blitzing it in a fortnight”, he turned the unremarkable rental into a characterful, multifaceted house.
