Selling ceramics, fabrics and accessories, the eponymous London-based label of Gergei Erdei tends to look to the past for inspiration. From Ancient Rome and Greece to the neoclassical era, he consistently finds escapism in antiquity.
For his latest collection Erdei harks back to the more recent, but no less distinctive history of 1970s and 1980s California. Entitled Hollywood Grand Tour, with reference points including the photography of Slim Aarons and icons such as Diana Ross and Elizabeth Taylor, the collection is a celebration of the era’s clashing maximalism and glamour. On the menu are chinoiserie-inspired, hand-printed octagonal plates, ‘oriente’ and palm-tree print furnishings as well as coloured crystal glassware. ‘I wanted to create a collection that reflects my evolving personal taste which has become more and more flamboyant. My moodboards scream colour, pattern and eclectic grandeur,’ says Erdei. Standout in the collection are the leopard print cushions and table covers. ‘Animal prints are my new thing,’ says Erdei. ‘They are a bit sexy and they evoke the mood of a smoky cocktail party hosted in a New York penthouse.’
With the Christmas season just about upon us, the collection will be a treasure trove for lovers of maximalist festive interiors. And for the hosts with a particular commitment to the theme, also on offer are luxurious silk kaftans and dressing gowns, a particularly louche 1970s look, to be worn whilst entertaining, or in front of the telly, at the buyer’s discretion.
