Kitchen case study: a kitchen for a Victorian family home

A narrow kitchen that leads in to a living space can be a challenge, one that has been tackled with chic aplomb in this Victorian family home through the combined efforts of Emma Jordan of Holloways of Ludlow and architect Ian Hume.

Layout

Owner: 'Deciding the layout was tricky because the space is quite narrow and we didn't want to intrude too much on the sitting room. We also wanted to have the fridge, cooker and sink close to each other in the classic triangle formation. At the same time, with an island and limited space, we also had to ensure that the appliances did not open into each other or obstruct the passage.'

Breakfast area

Designer:'A designated breakfast area next to the Gaggenau fridge keeps the toaster, cereals and other messy objects out of the way. Between the two we installed a section of white magnetic wall for notes, and artwork by the younger members of the family.'

Worktop

Owner: 'We wanted to keep our traditional Mercury range cooker and so chose a reclaimed Belgium oak worktop, which complements the cooker. It warms up the room, which would otherwise look very white. It is also extremely resilient and doesn't show up mess, which is very important with small children.'

Living space

Designer: 'We extended the reclaimed wood of the worktop down into a low seating area in the sitting room. Underneath it are large deep drawers which are great for storing clutter.'

Island

The owner: 'Holloways and our architect, Ian Hume, persuaded us to have an island, and to put our sink in it. My husband wanted it to be extra large to ensure dishes didn't pile up visibly. The island sink has been brilliant and so useful as you can approach it from all directions.'
