Gabby Deeming recommends downtown New York hotel The Beekman, newly opened and decorated by Martin Brudnizki
The Beekman opened in September 2016 to much fanfare from the design crowd, and rightly so. Not only is the building architecturally fascinating, but the team behind the development is the cream of the crop when it comes to smart spaces.
The hotel is housed in one of downtown New York's first skyscrapers and its remarkable history is in evidence all around, the highlight being the breathtaking nine-storey central atrium.
It had only been open a week when I stayed, and the smart Fowler & Wells bar on the ground floor was already buzzing with a good-looking cocktail hour crowd. The hotel's interiors were designed by one of House & Garden's top 100, Martin Brudnizki. Fans of Martin's smart and comfortable style will love his approach to this landmark building. The public areas are dark and cosy with jewel velvet sofas, marble tables and vintage light fittings.
The bedrooms are quite a contrast - light, bright and peaceful. Plenty of one-off designed table and floor lamps with dimmers put the mood lighting in your hands, the giant beds are spot-on and the bathrooms work beautifully.
Celebrated New York restaurateur Keith McNally's first downtown brasserie, Augustine, has opened in the hotel and is serving up light salads and French classics. For American fare, head to Fowler & Wells, run by Tom Colicchio.
While downtown New York may not be everyone's first choice of location, The Beekman might make you think again. The hotel has brought real design clout to an area that is gaining in vibrancy.
