In hugely exciting news for millennial women everywhere, Amazon Prime Video has announced that it will be continuing its on-screen adaptation of Jenny Han's young adult literary trilogy The Summer I Turned Pretty with the release of a movie. The unexpected news comes hot on the heels of the coming-of-age series' finale, which aired on Wednesday 17th September. Any viewers left downcast by the series' end were soon reassured by Amazon's commitment to continuing Jenny's vision. All that is left to do is wait in anticipation. No details of the plot or the cast have been announced yet, but based on the three series' ability to capture its audience, we have high hopes for its transition to the silver screen. Here's everything we know, or can guess, so far:
What will The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie be about?
The series so far have largely followed the same plot as the books: it all kicks off when we meet our protagonist, Isabel ‘Belly’ Conklin as she is about to turn 16. As she heads off to the fictional Cousins Beach – which is supposed to be a seafront town in New England but is actually filmed in and around Wilmington, a suitably pretty town in North Carolina – she has the distinct feeling that this summer will be a significant one.
The summer is spent with her family and their close friends, the Fishers, whose two boys of roughly Belly's age, Conrad and Jeremiah, will soon begin to form two corners of a love triangle with our heroine, of course, being the third.
The series' track Belly's love story, her grapples with entering into adulthood (or at least, young-womanhood), finding true love and losing close ones. There's a delicious will-they-won't-they that tracks throughout the series (though we won't give away any spoilers) and provides ongoing suspense.
Though so far we have received no news of the plot for the movie, what we do know is that writer Jenny Han told Variety magazine at the series finale red carpet celebration that ‘there is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due.’ Is it marriage, work, children? Our guess is as good as yours.
Where will The Summer I Turned Pretty be set?
Unless there is a major move in Belly's future, we assume, and hope, that the movie will bring us back to Cousins Beach, allowing us to spend more time among the white, painted clapboard houses and white sandy coasts of New England (in reality, North Carolina).
Who will be in The Summer I Turned Pretty movie?
The cast so far has seen Lola Tung in the role of Belly, with co-stars Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno playing brothers Conran and Jeremiah Fisher respectively. Other leading roles include Jackie Chung, who plays Laurel Park, Belly's mother and Sean Kaufman as Steven, her brother. Whether these actors will be turning to their roles for the movie or not remains to be seen, but we certainly hope so.
