The festive period is great for many things but if you're the one in charge of hosting over Christmas you'll be more than familiar with the stress that comes with it too. With so much to prepare, the last thing you need to be thinking about is the lumpy mattress in the spare room. Of course, finding an entirely new mattress is doable before Christmas and many of the best mattress brands will still deliver in time, but to make matters easier, prevent you from adding a very large mattress box to your already growing recycling pile, and save you from plenty of research, we've found a quick fix that will solve all of your problems for you. Let us introduce you to The White Company's Luxury White Down Topper, one of our top buys of 2025.
A mattress topper is much thicker and more padded than a mattress protector, and is designed to improve the level of comfort and support that your sleeping surface provides. Both foam and down-filled options are available, with memory foam ones tending to be firmer and down ones having a softer, more cocooning effect. The White Company's is so thick and supportive that it can completely transform your mattress, easily making a lumpy bed feel brand new, as I found out when I used it to bridge the time between my upgrading my old, very worn down mattress to the new one I now sleep on.
The White Company Luxury White Down Topper: is it worth buying?
This topper is the most luxurious one that The White Company offers, and also the most expensive. It has two layers and is much thicker than the other mattress toppers they stock, so I hoped that it would make more of a difference to my bed because of this added height and plushness.
The box it arrived in was rather large and heavy. On unboxing, I discovered the topper inside a large zippable plastic bag, which could be reused to store other bedding, duvets or pillows. One thing I would say, is that the process of taking the topper out of the bag, unfurling it and plopping it on the bed was a little cumbersome. The double topper is over 8kg; this, coupled with its large size, makes lifting and moving it around rather unwieldy and a bit of a full body workout. Having said that, it's only something you have to do once, and after the four elasticated straps are tucked under the mattress' four corners, it stays put.
The mattress topper is made up of the thicker, goose feather-filled base layer, and the goose down and feather-filled top layer, which is secured with buttons and can easily be removed and machine-washed. Alternatively, if you simply prefer the topper without the upper layer, you could remove it and use it without (although that perhaps defeats the object of purchasing a particularly thick and plush topper such as this).

Once the topper had been covered with a sheet and my duvet and pillows, I was immediately struck by how tall my bed appeared. This instant height boost somehow made my bed look more like a plump hotel bed than it had done previously. Looks wise, I was suitably impressed.
As my mattress is fairly firm, it did take a couple of nights to get used to the feel of the topper. Being filled with down, it's almost like a very dense, sturdier duvet under the sheet, so it has made my bed feel much softer than it was before. However, I quickly came around to the cloud-like nature of the topper. It is cocooning in a way that my mattress is not, it cradles my shoulder if I lie on my side, or provides light and airy support under my knees if I lie on my back. In terms of orthopaedic support, I feel like a firmer topper would possibly be better for this. If, however, a softer mattress is the objective, you can't really go wrong with the Luxury White Down Topper. I think it would be a good idea to use this topper with a firm mattress underneath, in order to have the underlying layer of sturdy support, combined with the airy soft cushioning of the topper.

How much does The White Company Luxury White Down Topper cost?
£300 for a single, £350 for a double which is what I have, £380 for a king, £470for a super king, and £500 for an emperor. It's not the cheapest topper out there by any means, but you can really feel the quality in the thick, crisp cotton casing and the density of the down and feathers inside.
Delivery
Free UK delivery over £60. Returns can be made within 30 days of receipt and cost from £2.50 or free to store. However, for hygiene reasons, the packaging should be fully intact to be able to return this topper. As mentioned previously, the box was very large and pretty heavy, so if you need to carry it up flights of stairs in the box, it might be easier to do this with two people, or alternatively unbox it before and carry it upstairs in the bag, which has a handle.
The White Company Luxury White Down Topper verdict
My bed has undoubtedly become a more comfortable and cosy place to sleep since it's been decked out with The White Company's topper, and it looks smarter and taller to boot. It's a simple way to level up your bed without shelling out hundreds more on a high-end new mattress. This is also ideal for renters in furnished accommodation. Its quality and sumptuous thickness feels worth the slightly higher expense, compared to if you spent less on a thin topper that is essentially a glorified mattress protector. I would recommend it for those who prefer a softer surface to sleep on.
