When my partner was approaching thirty, he took to Reddit and asked ‘is there anything you wish you had done in your thirties, now that you’re in your forties?’ He had an almost viral reaction with advice ranging from investment choices to existential wisdom. He tallied the top three most recurring answers in the hope of learning something and in at number one was ‘invest in a good mattress’ - really, I promise you. The knackered backs of Reddit have spoken. And what better time to investigate than the Black Friday mattress sales. Rem-Fit have one of the longest-running Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, with deals still on until December 8th, so act fast to save big.
It’s taken us a while to get ourselves into gear since, mainly because where do you even begin? Let’s be honest, the biggest thing getting between you and your too-old mattress is spending a big whack on something quite unfun that you can’t try-before-you-buy. My old mattress was tried and tested in a regional Dreams store but times have changed and flopping on a showroom mattress in your coat and boots whilst Tim gives you a sales pitch isn’t the norm anymore. With so many magical-mystery ‘internet mattresses’ to choose from, it becomes an easy can to kick down the road. Admittedly, I cheated the system and REM-Fit kindly offered me a hybrid mattress to try for an honest review. As a seasonal insomniac with back problems, I’m a tricky customer.
REM-Fit 400 Hybrid - is it worth buying?
In short, yes. Over the years I have put my body through the ringer, as has my partner - he’s a baker lugging around 25kg flour sacks all day whilst I had spent years pulling mannequins out of shop windows and moving heavy boxes in a previous career and now spend a lot of time schlepping around big bags and moving heavy furniture in this one. As a result, we need to take care of our bodies. If I don’t sleep on a supportive mattress my lower half is seized up for the first hour of the morning. The deep, zoned memory foam adapts to the sleeper, supports joints and relieves pressure points. For this reason, the REM-Fit 400 Hybrid has been a total game-changer and all signs of my morning immobility have completely gone.
Investing in your physical wellbeing, though less exciting than investing in some new shoes is obviously worthwhile. Buying something that will genuinely improve your life in a fully tangible way is a sensible use of Black Friday deals. If a new mattress is on your agenda, now is the moment!
How did it test?
I’m a sleeper of many talents - I sleep on my back, front and side. The REM-Fit 400 holds you in a curious way, being firm yet also cloud-like. Comforting, yet supportive as any good friend should be. The quality of my sleep overall has improved as I’m not trying to awkwardly change sleep position once my stiffness has set in. Whilst the memory foam absorbs you, it’s not a total marshmallow effect, which I appreciate as a too-soft mattress isn’t the one for me.
The REM-Fit 400 is described as being of ‘medium tension’ which I would agree with. It has 200 full height pocket springs which contour around the sleeper with breathable open-cell memory foam - it also has motion isolation, which now I come to think of it, does work a treat, as my partner doesn’t get disturbed by my movements in the night. It also has side support walls so it doesn’t sag like a classic sprung mattress can sometimes do.
The only time I have felt any discomfort during sleeping on the REM-Fit is when I occasionally sleep on my front, as my weight distribution feels bottom heavy with the absorption of the foam, which puts too much pressure on my lumbar spine, however my partner who has the same issues and sleep positions gets on fine! As mentioned, I’m someone plagued with seasonal insomnia; I often find myself staring at the ceiling for the best part of the night at this time of year. Although I don’t expect a mattress, however supportive, to cure this, I can say that during those long bouts of a thousand thoughts a minute for hours on end, I do think ‘gosh, at least I’m very comfortable’ which is the best of a not-ideal situation and allows me to feel physically rested.
