A farmhouse restored with soul by Maria Speake of Retrouvius

Maria Speake of Retrouvius has restored the spirit of an unattractively extended Georgian farmhouse in the Chilterns by introducing modern and reclaimed industrial elements.

Bruin, the Capheaton terrier, accompanies you in friendly fashion on the ground floor, but does not venture upstairs, where the elegant Burmese cat, Asia, reigns supreme. Here, as in the hall, Maria has opened out what she calls a 'flow space', making a generous landing from a former bedroom and lining its walls with reclaimed boards from a gym. 'The boys are young now and they use it for table football, or even real football. But when they are teen-agers, it will be the perfect spot to sit and read or chat,' says Maria. In the five remaining bedrooms, there are brightly coloured, naïve wallpapers by The Art of Wallpaper in the children's bathroom and a spare room, and a laser-etched design of birds and foliage by the fabric designer Daniel Heath in the main dressing room, which adjoins the main bedroom.

The family is very happy with the design, but the aspect they most appreciate is that Maria has made a house for a lifetime. While all the specialist work was taking place, they lived in the Byre - the lovely old stables in the garden, which Maria restored before work began in the main house. It is now the husband's study and used as overspill for guests. 'The Byre will be the most perfect space for the boys to invite their friends from university,' says Maria. They are now aged seven, five and two - that is long-term planning.
