From here it's due west to Vancouver, the city ranked as offering one of the best qualities of life in the world. And Vancouverites certainly do love their city. I was almost embarrassed by the enthusiasm of my compatriots - whether it was the porter at the elegant Wedgewood Hotel or the cheese seller at Granville Island Public Market, everyone shows an infectious love of the place. With calm beaches curving along the edge of the city and the mountains a mere hour's drive away, I can hardly blame them.

Vancouver is the ideal spot from which to enjoy the lower mainland of British Columbia: venture to Vancouver Island, take a cruise up to Alaska, or cross the border to the United States. Should you do the latter, you'll pass through White Rock, the impossibly pretty seaside town where I grew up. This is where we head, straight to the beach dominated by the enormous white boulder from which the town takes its name. The rock features in one of the legends of the local Semiahmoo people about White Rocks' origins, and involves love, princesses and sea gods. For me, it's a familiar tale from my childhood and, after eight days on the road, I know I am home.
