A fixer-upper in Southern France decorated by the textile designer Kathryn Ireland

After visiting her friend Kathryn Ireland in France's Tarn region, Anne Halsey bought a farmhouse there and enlisted the help of the decorator to create a relaxed retreat perfect for entertaining

Anne's friend Louise was also doing up her new home in the Tarn at the time, so they decided to share a shipping container from Los Angeles to transport furniture. 'And really, once you have a container, you might as well fill it.'

Come the end of that May, the containers were loaded and shipped to Marseille. Then Anne had to endure a frustrating three-week customs hold-up before they were free to trundle to the south-west. When the van got stuck on the narrow lane up to the house, the goods were disgorged and brought the rest of the way with the help of the neighbour's tractor. 'I'd always loved what Kathryn had done with her house,' says Anne. 'I suppose we wanted something that was quite fun and relaxed, low key and not grand. It's what Kathryn does so well.'

Today Anne spends four or so months a year here. And, just as Kathryn opened her door to Anne and her family all those years ago, Anne is able to welcome friends and family who descend in the summer months. 'As a house, there is a real focus on guests and entertaining,' she says. 'There are lots of places to hang out, which means that, even when the house is full, there's somewhere to escape to.'
