Sandra Barrio von Hurter's London house is packed full of playful patterns and an abundance of colour that brings her more traditional space to life. A jewellery designer by trade, Sandra herself decrees that there is a symmetry between her pieces and her home, saying, “my jewellery also walks the line between playful and elegant, fun and serious–a nice balance. No one would ever say it’s too out there.” Her product range has recently extended to homeware, including murano glass cocktail sticks and candlesticks. A preview of the ‘5 A Day Single Flower Vase’ can be seen on her mantlepiece in image two of the original story.
Choosing decorative pieces for a house, as you would dress an outfit with jewellery, is no mean feat, yet Sandra does it adeptly and with a relaxed flair. But what's her trick? In the spirit of sharing, she's opened up her sourcebook, so you can shop her picks to your heart's content.
In the living room
In her living room, Sandra pairs more muted tones with clever bursts of colour. A pale pink linen sofa from Sofa.com provides the perfect background for bold cushions and offers a visual juxtaposition to Ceraudo's busier armchair. Another Ceraudo piece, the coffee table, provides space for objets, books and magazines.
By the fireplace
Using bookcases and a statement armchair, Sandra has created a vignette by the fireplace. Under foot, a scalloped border adds a playful touch to a classic jute rug.
In the kitchen
The kitchen is where Sandra's love of colour can really be seen, with Zellige tiles in pale pink, green and yellow lining the walls above the cupboards. In a cheerful mismatch that's echoed in her Le Creuset mugs, the cupboard drawers and doors are painted in hues of oranges, greens and reds. Hung above the kitchen table, rattan pendant lights from Matilda Goad provide a soft contrast to the metal chairs.
In the studio
Sandra's studio needed to be a place for her creativity to roam free. As a result, it's a well layered space filled with art, textures and patterns. On the floor, La Redoute's Madotto rug provides warmth underfoot. Sandra has chosen to display the more cream heavy side of the rug, as opposed to the redder side shown below. As are used in the guest bedroom as bedside tables, Ikea's Nikkeby drawers provide storage for Sandra's many tools.
In the master bedroom
A quilt by Lisa Corti provides the focal point in this spacious bedroom, and the brilliant colours within the bedding are reflected in the blinds and Pooky lampshades. At the head of the bed, cushions by Projektityyny are displayed.
In the guest bedroom
In Sandra's guest bedroom, the overall feeling is of warmth and calm. Ikea's Nikkeby drawers are simultaneously bedside tables and storage, offering space for guests to unpack. On top, a Pooky table lamp base is paired with a stylish Matilda Goad lampshade.
In the bathroom
The floor of the family bathroom is covered in checkered vinyl floor by Harvey Maria, the colours of which perfectly match the sink cabinetry. For storage, Sandra has placed wicker baskets on a low shelf. Similar ones can be found at John Lewis.
