Founded in 2011, Artifact Lighting creates contemporary lighting rooted in traditional English craftsmanship. Inspired by antique forms and the heritage of local manufacturing, their work honours the value of "Made in England.”From their Dorset coast workshop, they design and handcraft each piece using natural materials, particularly plaster, to create lighting that is beautiful, thoughtfully crafted, and enhances the wellbeing of those who use the spaces. The development of the Rocco pendant marked a turning point, deepening their exploration of plaster’s expressive and sustainable potential.Influenced by the textures and tones of the surrounding cliffs and coastline, their pieces are formed from a simple blend of plaster, sand and water. The result is a calming, tactile finish that reflects the principles of earth and stone, embracing natural imperfections and the quiet beauty found in simplicity.Every product reflects a commitment to low-impact, local manufacturing, combining traditional techniques with a modern, environmentally conscious approach. By keeping production in-house and close to home, Artifact Lighting reduces waste, minimises transport emissions and eliminates unnecessary packaging.What is your biggest source of inspiration?"Our biggest source of inspiration is the natural landscape of the Dorset coast, its textures, tones, and quiet beauty. The cliffs, stone, and sea inform our material choices and aesthetics, particularly our work with plaster.We’re also deeply influenced by traditional English craftsmanship and hands-on manufacturing. This ensures every detail is thoughtfully made, resulting in lighting that carries both a sense of place and a legacy of true craftsmanship."What makes your approach to design different?“We take a slow, hands-on approach, designing and making everything in our studio, using natural materials.
