About
Luke Irwin is an award-winning rug designer headquartered on the Pimlico Road in London. With decades of experience and established relationships with mills in Jaipur and Kathmandu, Luke Irwin combines traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic to produce hand-knotted rugs made from wool, silk, cashmere and sari silk. Luke Irwin’s collections are also represented in multiple showrooms in the USA and UAE.What is the biggest source of inspiration? Our collection of designs takes inspiration from multiple sources and influences – nature, history, geography, modern and ancient motifs, paintings and colours. Each rug is bespoke through a collaborative process with our design team during which the client specifies the size and colour, as well as the mix and richness of materials, creating beautiful, original pieces that last for generations. What makes your approach to design different?"Our approach to design always begins with a story that carries some kind of meaning, evokes a personal memory or experience and creates a sense of connection. The narrative, whether inspired by something personal, historical or in nature, is a consistent theme in our designs, which hone traditional techniques whilst finding ways to reinterpret them to fit a contemporary aesthetic. In your opinion, what makes a design timeless?"The sources of design inspiration for our collections are not subject to fashion or fads and are therefore, by their very nature, timeless. The creation process originates with a story and is therefore more driven by intellect than by any trend. The resulting rug, when installed in a room, is sufficiently subtle that it is the last piece to be noticed, making it a piece that remains versatile and lasts generations, both physically and aesthetically."
