About

RIBA-chartered Lynch Architects is based in Hackney, London, and is known for its intelligent and poetic handling of complex briefs. The practice was founded by Patrick Lynch in 2000 and is run alongside fellow directors Claudia Lynch and David Evans.

A long-standing engagement with conservation and listed buildings runs through the studio’s work. Their residential projects have been widely recognised, most recently with Jankes Barn - a finely tuned rural conversion that received both the RIBA East and RIBA Conservation Awards in 2025. One of the studio’s early projects, Marsh View, the reimagining of a 1950s bungalow on the Norfolk coast, was described by Stephen Bayley in The Observer as “a masterpiece”. Westminster Coroner's Court won the Little Gem Building Beauty Award from the Royal Fine Art Commission in 2024, and the RIAI International Award 2025.

The practice develops its projects through a layered, hands-on process, using models, sketches and detailed visualisations to explore scale, atmosphere and material presence from the earliest stages. The finished buildings often remain true to the initial studies, reflecting a belief in precision, restraint, and the value of refinement.

What is your design ethos? What values are important to you in your work?

“We believe in the craft of architecture, and that good design entails editing and refinement, what might be called the search for a poetic economy of means.”

In your opinion, what makes a design timeless?

“Timeless design is useful, meaningful and beautiful. It sensitively responds to the natural and cultural conditions that it becomes a part of.”

Why do your clients come to you? What do they value about your work?

“Our clients value the combination of artistic imagination and practical approach that we bring to each project. Often they come to us with particularly difficult problems that we solve in a way that exceeds their expectations.”

How do you stay inspired and keep evolving your ideas?

“We approach each project anew. Our best ideas derive from a creative relationship with our clients, and our best clients are both, trusting and challenging.”
