About

Roger Oates Design is an award-winning, industry-leading flooring brand, renowned for distinctive striped stair runners and rugs.

Combining artisan heritage with a contemporary approach, Roger Oates Design creates luxury 100% wool stair runners and rugs defined by good design, UK production and responsible material choices.

For over 35 years, the company has created iconic striped flatweave flooring traditionally woven on specially adapted Hattersley looms in small-scale mills. Expanding its collections, Roger Oates now offers innovative hand-tufted rugs showcasing modern craftsmanship, made and finished by hand in Devon.

The timeless designs, in carefully curated colours, are individually crafted. Each piece is fully customisable in colour, size and texture, with the design team working closely with interior designers to create bespoke flooring for unique projects.

At every stage of production, skilled craftspeople bring the brand’s vision to life, connecting design with the people and processes behind it.

Proudly celebrating British wool, the company sources through The Woolkeepers, a transparent and verified wool community that provides sourcing integrity and a fair wool price for the farmers, with traceability back to the farm where the sheep are reared. This partnership honours the connection between design, craftsmanship and the land.

Roger Oates Design has showrooms in London and Herefordshire, supported by a network of stockists offering advice, measuring and installation services.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

"For inspiration, we usually look towards the natural world, art and fashion. We also have an extensive archive from which we are constantly lifting small motifs or colour combinations - this is how we maintain our ‘handwriting'."

What makes your approach to design different?

“We are designers and makers. The latter gives us complete control over every aspect and detail of our products. We design 'on loom’, making increasingly small adjustments to our ideas and discarding many samples to arrive at a finished design. It's often as much about what you take out as what you put in.”

In your opinion, what makes a design timeless?

“To each of our clients, timelessness can have a unique meaning. For us, it signifies meticulously chosen colours and patterns, produced to an exceptional standard. Everything we have ever made has been designed for someone to fall in love with, cherish and live with. Over the past 35 years, we have been refining and reinventing our designs to suit modern interiors, starting with our initial Venetian Flatweave collection, which drew inspiration from early 19th-century historic runners.”
