There are very few furnishings and homewares that are universally attractive in any setting. A leather sofa can look wonderful in a moody study, but plain weird in a more traditional sitting room. A large scale artwork might be the perfect finishing touch in your hallway, but an abstract nightmare in the bedroom. However, if there is a furnishing that seems to work in every room, from contemporary kitchens to grand bedrooms, it is surely the jute rug.
MAY WE SUGGEST: Jute rugs: why interior designers love them and where to buy the best ones
Even as we declare the jute rug universally appealing, it's always useful to see inspiring examples of one in situ. As such, we've looked through the House & Garden archive to find three excellent rooms that feature jute rugs. From a jewel box sitting room to a serene bedroom, there's inspiration aplenty below.
Pair it with a serene palette
Designer Jessica Summer is well known for her serene palettes, and this London house is no exception. With walls in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Smoked Trout' and crisp white linen curtains, this bedroom may have felt cold, but Jessica has added a warm hued bedspread, fireplace and, of course, a jute rug.
Go for a layered look
In this colourful London house that belongs to novelist Andrew O'Hagan, the bedroom is an eclectic space, where patterns clash pleasingly. A large jute rug grounds the scheme, adding warmth the floor without detracting from the bolder elements in the room. Jane Ormsby-Gore, who designed the room, has layered a more playful rug on top of the jute one, which is a clever trick for when you love a rug, but it's the wrong size for a space.
Use jewel box colours
Stella Weatherall's London house is ripe with ideas, from her bright yellow sofa to the mixture of art on her walls. In the sitting room, she has combined inky blues, fuschia pinks and sunny yellows to charming effect. It's an unusual palette, which feels relaxed and cheerful. On the floor, a jute rug provides a natural, subtle base to build on.
