It's been a while since Pride and Prejudice has seen a new adaptation and of course, rather than write something new and compelling, it's time for a redo. Following on from the Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen 2005 film version, Netflix has taken up the mantle and are in the process of creating a six-part adaptation, with Dolly Alderton is writing the screenplay. There is no release date set yet, but filming has just begun and a whole host of cast members and their respective characters have just been announced. This is everything we know so far about Netflix's upcoming Pride and Prejudice adaptation.
Who is in Pride and Prejudice?
Three major characters were initially announced back in April shortly after the series was announced. The two main roles, that of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy, will be played by Emma Corrin (The Crown, Lady Chatterley's Lover) and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Dunkirk) respectively, while Olivia Colman will take on the character of Mrs Bennet, Elizabeth's (some might say busybody) mother. She will undoubtedly be brilliant in the part. In the House & Garden office, there has been much discussion over the titular roles and the casting – so watch this space for our dream cast list. Our feverish anticipation to know the real cast can now be put to rest, however, as the rest of the ensemble has just been revealed.
Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat, Scoop) will play Mr Bennet - a hard pair of shoes to fill following Donald Sutherland in the 2005 adaptation. Similarly, Mr Darcy has been hard to compete with ever since Colin Firth and that white shirt lake scene. Few can fit the role so perfectly as he did, so we eagerly await Lowden's take. Freya Mavor (Industry) will play Jane Bennet, and Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats, Barbie) will take on the part of Mr Collins. Joining them are Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) as Mr Bingley and Louis Partridge (House of Guinness, Disclaimer) as Mr Wickham. Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper, Cabaret) will play youngest sister Lydia Bennet, while newcomers Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery will make their screen debuts as the other Bennet sisters, Mary and Kitty. Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve, Bad Sisters) will portray Lady Catherine de Bourg, and Siena Kelly, recently seen in Black Mirror, will play Caroline Bingley.
The remaining cast includes Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts, A Streetcar Named Desire) as Mrs Gardiner, Sebastian Armesto (Gangs of London, A Small Light) as Mr Gardiner, alongside Rosie Cavaliero (KAOS, Bookish) playing Lady Lucas and Saffron Coomber (Three Little Birds and Die Zweiflers), who will be Mrs Hurst.
Is there a release date for Pride and Prejudice?
No news has come through yet about a potential release date, though with filming only just having started, the likelihood is that the series will land on Netflix some time in 2026.
Is there a trailer for Pride and Prejudice?
There is no trailer yet as filming has just begun, but we will be keeping our eyes peeled for it so watch this space.
Who is writing Pride and Prejudice?
Of course, Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice back in 1813, but for this new version, Dolly Alderton is adapting the novel for screen. ‘Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it’, she told Netflix. Dolly has previous experience in turning a book into a series, having written the screenplay for her own memoir, Everything I Know About Love, which aired on the BBC in 2022. This is only her second foray into screenwriting and Dolly will also be an executive producer on the series, alongside Emma Corrin. Sources claim that the adaptation will be faithful to the original text.
Who is directing Pride and Prejudice?
Euros Lyn has been tapped to direct the series (and will be another executive producer). She previously has directed Happy Valley, Doctor Who and Broadchurch, which saw her work with Olivia Colman.
