Fans of the Upper East Side drama The Gilded Age have reason to rejoice: it's coming back for a third season in June. HBO announced the return of the New York high society show last year, which is set during the titular ‘Gilded Age’ that saw an economic and social boom in New York at the end of the 19th century. We've been with the characters for two seasons now, and seen some pretty dramatic plot developments in the old-money van Rhijn and new-money Russell families, and we're excited for what is to come. What has Bertha got up her sleeve next as she continues her takeover of New York society? What role will Peggy play in the shifting social tides of Brooklyn? How will Agnes van Rhijn cope with the shift in power dynamics at home? And seriously, what is going on with Marian's love life?

In short, we don't know, but we can't wait to find out. There are few details out now, but here's what we know so far.

Who is in the cast for The Gilded Age season 3?

Carrie Coon is back as The other big names on the show, such as Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon and Louisa Jacobson (van Rhijn family, tick), are also returning as well as Jordan Donica, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Victoria Clark and Phylicia Rashad.

Phylicia Rashad will star as Elizabeth Kirkland – described by the show as “a woman from a prominent family in Newport with ties dating back to the American Revolution, who has high standards and an occasionally sharp tongue” – with Brian Stokes Mitchell as her pastor husband and Jordan Donica will play their son, William. Victoria Clark is joining as Joan Carlton, a woman from “the old money side of New York high society”.

Where was The Gilded Age season 3 filmed?

All three seasons of The Gilded Age have been filmed in self-consciously opulent and memorable locales. One is The Breakers, the gargantuan, ironically named 70-room “summer cottage” belonging to the Vanderbilts in Newport, Rhode Island – its Great Hall and Music Room have stood in as the Russells’ own ballroom and George’s bedroom, respectively. Built between 1893 and 1895 in Renaissance Revival style, it is aptly one of the enduring symbols of the real-life Gilded Age. Another is Marble House, likewise built for (a different branch of) the Vanderbilt family, modelled on the White House, and the inspiration for Bertha Russell’s on-screen pink bedroom.

Newport was the New England centre of mansion-building among the super-rich of the Gilded Age, and much of that set’s social life centred on and around the town, at least in the summer. As such, it’s a conurbation with numerous notable residences – others which appear in the series alongside The Breakers and Marble House include The Elms, Rosecliff, Château-sur-Mer, Hunter House, Belcourt and The Ledges. Newport Art Museum and the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum (which is in the town) have also each made fleeting appearances in the series.

Where can I watch The Gilded Age?

Being an HBO series, UK viewers will be able to watch the series on Now TV, or Sky Atlantic.
