We found the Grand Spruce to be a highly realistic artificial Christmas tree. Left: the assembled tree. Right: the decorated tree.

A little smaller and more affordable than some of the other tress from The White Company, this pre-lit artificial Christmas tree greatly impressed us for its seriously realistic appearance. We tested and decorated this tree for our shoot (seen above), and below you can find a breakdown of our thoughts on the product. The exact model of the tree that we tested is the 6ft pre-lit. While this one is no longer available, the unlit 6ft version is. The White Company also sell a towering 9ft pre-lit version, as well as a 7.5ft unlit edition.

The White Company Black Friday Christmas tree deals

For ‘White Week’, the brand's site-wide discount event, there is 20% off everything, meaning you can now save over £50 on the 6ft version of this ultra-realistic tree, and have it in time for decorating in December, as delivery is in 5-7 days. There's almost £80 off the 7.5ft version, and a huge £159 off the 9ft. Just make sure to use the promo code ‘WHITE20’ to take advantage of the discount.

6ft Grand Spruce Christmas Tree

House & Garden's verdict:

From realistic, bushy foliage to memory foam flex technology, The White Company's artificial Christmas trees are a cut above the rest. This was the second of their offering that made our cut, but this time it's a more squat, less even structure. The ‘Grand Spruce’ is very easy to assemble, with a stand that can take the weight of the tree and plenty of Christmas decorations (you'd be surprised at how many can't do that). Plus, this artificial Christmas tree is available unlit or pre lit, which means you don't need to faff around with string lights. The only downside to this tree is that it doesn't come with a seagrass or rattan tree skirt like the ‘Symons’ model does. Fortunately, there are some very smart tree skirts out there. Overall, the ‘Grand Spruce’, plus a tree skirt works out cheaper than the ‘Symons’.

Initial impressions

We felt that this tree had a totally different shape to the thicker Symons Nordmann Fir that we tested. This one has a more of a tapered shape, with a longer, sparser top section and more uneven, overhanging branches. It's not quite as bushy as the other tree throughout its entire body, but in this particular tree's case, we think that only adds to its realism. The longer, slimmer top end section reminded me of the imperfect, often asymmetrical look of real Christmas pines.

Assembly and contents review

Our commerce editor, Bella, managed to put up this tree by herself, but found it a little more cumbersome than some of the others we tested, due to the wider shape of its base. Generally, though, it was very straightforward to assemble, and we were particularly impressed with the way the lights connect simply when you connect the tree sections. This also results in a neater look with less unappealing wires in amongst the branches and trunk.

Some of the branches don't have malleable wire inside them, so can't all be posed at will like some of our other choices, but we didn't find that this affected the overall appearance or naturalism of the tree. Bonus points go to this tree for having the highest tip count per foot out of our top five picks, and the most bulbs out of any of our pre-lit picks.

We would have loved it if the tree came with a skirt to cover up the stand - like our other White Company pick did - but this one does come in at a much lower price, so we think it's worth spending a little extra on a nice tree skirt to pair with it. For our shoot, we used this tree skirt from Dunelm, but The White Company also sell their own.

One thing to note is that the top of the tree really struggled to hold the weight of our lovely bird tree topper, and was swaying around rather a lot. So a lighter tree topper would be recommended for this tree. That would probably be the main drawback that we found with this tree.

Delivery

This tree qualifies for free standard delivery, which is 5-7 days at The White Company. Last year, the delivery time frame was 7-10 days so this is a huge improvement that The White Company has made. We really appreciated not having any charge for delivery, especially when splashing out on a high-end Christmas tree such as this one.

The White Company Grand Spruce Christmas Tree verdict

If you're looking for a not-too-perfect looking artificial tree (which for us means more realism), then you can't really go wrong with this one. It sits at a much more accessible price point than the Symons Nordmann Fir, and the 6ft size should be a good fit for most rooms, and particularly for smaller rooms, where it won't look oversized. Alternatively, if you have very high ceilings or a particularly large living room, you'll want to go for the 9ft tree.
