Self Portrait: Christine Van Der Hurd

The first of a new series. This month, the textile designer paints a picture of her life, work and inspirations

1. Gabriella Kiss

I love this delicate and whimsical pin by Gabriella Kiss from Quadrum Gallery.

2. Bauhaus

Until my late teens, I was a complete romantic and then I saw a Bauhaus exhibition at the Royal Academy that changed everything. I'd never seen anything like it - the designs were so beautifully simple and streamlined.

3. Gio Ponti

Our Azul collection (below) was inspired by Gio Ponti, particularly his design for the Parco dei Principi hotel in Sorrento (above). Like Giò Ponti, structure, pattern, colour and balance are vital to what I do.

4. Georgia O'Keeffe

Last year's exhibition of Georgia O'Keeffe at Tate Modern was mind-boggling. Her use of colour is incomparable. Pictured is Blue and Green Music (1919-21).

5. Henri Matisse

Self Portrait Christine Van Der Hurd | Interiors

Henri Matisse was 71 and lying in hospital preparing to die when something quite unexpected happened. An operation that left him too weak to paint or get out of bed led to the creation of his cut-outs. Alastair Sooke's book Henri Matisse: A Second Life (Penguin, £5.99) charts this period. I love the idea of thinking it's the end when actually it's a new beginning.

6. Rajasthanhttps://www.houseandgarden.co.uk/article/travel-guide-jaipur

Rajasthan is an endless source of inspiration. The markets in Jaipur are just incredible - from the turban bazaar to the bangle bazaar, even the tin bazaar. The Samode Palace hotel (below), which is about an hour outside the city, is extraordinary.

Fashion designer Wendy Nichol is a genius. We collaborated with her on a range of bags featuring Vanderhurd dhurrie patterns.

8. Jacques Granges

Jacques Granges is one of my favourite interior designers. I love him for his ability to mix old and new; his quirkiness; his adaptability to environments. He always chooses with such wisdom and elegance.
