The House & Garden team's favourite fictional rooms from film and TV
If ever you wanted proof that taste is completely individual, you need only ask a group of people which fictional room from a film or TV show is their favourite and why. Not their favourite simply because it's beautiful, but one they would happily live in and copy design ideas from. For proof of this, see below, where ten House & Garden team members offered up the fictional spaces that have set their hearts a-flutter, caused their decorating minds to spin into overdrive and provided ideas for how to achieve a similar look at home. The answers span from English cottages to a very famous Seattle apartment (complete with a view over the city that is impossible to recreate in real life), via the most famous living room to hit our screens and an enviable New York roof garden.

'Frasier Crane's flat in the fictional Elliot Bay Towers is my dream house. It is perfectly designed for sitcom life, with floor to ceiling windows looking out on the Seattle skyline, a sofa modelled on the one in Coco Chanel's Paris atelier, a host of abstract art, and the loveliest small kitchen (mysteriously soundproof despite being open to the living room). It manages to look incredibly 1990s and completely timeless all at once, and I'd be perfectly willing to live the farcical life of a sitcom character if I could do it there.' - Virginia Clark, Digital Features Editor
2/10The roof terrace in Green Card
'My perfect space would be the New York roof terrace of the apartment lived in by Andie MacDowell's character in the film Green Card. I fell completely in love with it when I first saw the film years ago as it combines my passion for gardening with one of my favourite cities - New York. The apartment is on top of a tall old New York apartment block and has a beautiful old conservatory area that leads out onto the roof terrace - being able to potter among plants in this tranquil haven while being perched so high up in the middle of the city is my idea of heaven!' - Sue Gilkes, Deputy Chief Sub-Editor

'I completely understand that Villanelle's Parisian apartment is far more enviable, but something about Eve's kitchen calls to me. I love the idea of adding a dining table to the end of a kitchen island, extending it out into the open-plan living room. So much so, that we're even thinking of implementing it into my own flat. 'While Monica's living room in Friends may not be the most on-trend space on our screens, what the lilac walls and faded carpet have come to symbolise renders it the perfect living room. The open living space is designed for conversation and the eclectic mixture of vintage advertising posters, faded sofas and an antique rocking horse somehow all comes together in a jumbled yet strangely coherent ode to communal living and friendship.' - Rumer Neill, Editorial Assistant

'The house was in the Hamptons I think and the room was large and airy. Diane Keaton played a writer and her desk was set in a huge bow window looking out onto greenery. The furniture was pale with lots of bookshelves filled with books and the sofas and chairs white. The floor was covered with a series of wide striped blue and white kilims and the room was at the beginning of such trends in interiors and had an enormous impression on many people who saw the (very funny) film, not just myself.' - Liz Elliot, Editor-at-Large

'I love the kitchen - and in fact the whole house, which is plot-relevant because the dad is a property developer and they built on top of a mass colonial grave, hence the hauntings - from the 80s Stephen King Classic Poltergeist. 'I was just about to leave home when this film came out and the interior chimed with me immediately. The apartment is basically Meg Ryan in decoration from, pretty, quirky and always in slight disarray.... It held the exoticism of New York but with plenty of familiar touches, the chintzy sofas, bookshelves and lamps everywhere - most importantly it was her own place, what a thrill!
