To the unprofessional eye it all looks like a risk, but Stephan says he pulls it off through instinct and experience, of which he has plenty, having worked with interior designer Diana Sieff and Parisian architect Pierre-Hervé Walbaum in his pre-Houghton days. 'I have learnt that you can go slightly mad and still be tasteful,' he says.

A pared-down, lighter, cooler look in the bathrooms and kitchen acts as a counterpoint to the richness of the decoration in the rest of the house. The en-suite bathroom off the main bedroom, for instance, has elegant, Arabescato marble, pale grey paint, a dark wood floor with a simple, monochrome dhurrie, and traditional shutters that provide privacy but also let in lots of light. 'I hate dark bathrooms,' says Stephan.

There is also marble in the kitchen, where it is paired with clean, minimalist units by Boffi. 'I wanted to create a kitchen that is modern, but also restful,' he says.

The room he most enjoyed designing belongs to the owner's two sons, aged three and six. His starting point was the eldest's obsession with trains, and this led him to the wallpaper by The New Yorker cartoonist Saul Steinberg, which he teamed with a turquoise carpet and red-and-white fabrics. Accessorised with vintage toy trains, the room is original and playful without being overdone or saccharine.

The owner, however, favours the drawing room. 'I love it; it's perfect. It has so many pieces that I know I will keep for ever,' she enthuses. Regard ing the decorating process, she says: 'I am very decisive, and I know what I like, but occasionally I make spontaneous choices. Stephan has averted potential disasters, and translated my taste and what I wanted for this house into some thing tangible. It has been a genuinely thrilling experience. With recommendations like that, the world of interior design is likely to see a lot more of Stephan Eicker.
