If you want to save energy and money, you might want to install insulated double- or triple-pane windows in your home. These windows are also known as IGUs (insulated glass units) and they have two or three layers of glass that are sealed together with a gap between them. The gap can be filled with air or an inert gas like argon or krypton, which helps reduce heat transfer and improve insulation.
But sometimes, these windows can develop a problem: foggy glass. This happens when the seals around the edges of the glass break down and allow outside air and moisture to enter the gap between the glass layers. When the outside glass is colder than the inside glass, the moisture condenses and forms droplets or haze on the glass. This makes the window look cloudy and reduces its energy efficiency.
Fortunately, you don’t have to replace the whole window if this happens. There are a few ways to fix foggy windows that are cheaper and easier than window replacement:
- Replace the window sashes: The window sash is the part of the window that holds the IGU and the frame around it. You can remove the old sash and install a new one with a fresh IGU that has intact seals and gas filling. This will restore the clarity and insulation of your window.
- Replace the IGU: If you don’t want to replace the whole sash, you can just replace the IGU itself. You will need to carefully remove the old IGU from the sash, clean the frame, and install a new IGU with proper sealant. This will also fix the foggy glass problem and improve your window’s performance.
- Defog the IGU: This is a less invasive method that involves drilling small holes in the glass and injecting a cleaning solution into the gap between the glass layers. The solution will remove the moisture and dirt from inside the IGU and then evaporate through the holes. This will clear up the foggy glass but it won’t restore the gas filling or sealant of your window.
These are some of the options you have for fixing foggy windows in your home. Depending on your budget, skill level, and preference, you can choose one of them to make your windows look clear and beautiful again.
