Martinis may be made in different ways according to taste. If you prefer it 'wet', keep the vermouth in the cocktail. If you like a dry martini, remove most of the vermouth after coating the mixing glass. 'With a twist' means the martini has a lemon garnish, providing citrus taste. Or you can have an olive garnish, providing a more savoury taste.

With such few ingredients, the martini relies on using the the very best available. Choose a quality vermouth such as Noilly Prat or Lillet. For the gin, try Plymouth, which has a longstanding association with the cocktail. The first ever recipe for the Dry Martini highlighted Plymouth as the recommended gin in 1896. By the height of the cocktail era, Plymouth was synonymous with the iconic cocktails of the time.
