Upgrading from New York’s Upper East Side to Gramercy Park is a move that would have many New Yorkers – and indeed non-urbanites – salivating, but then And Just Like That… and its predecessor Sex and the City were always potent vehicles for real-estate wish fulfilment. It wasn’t hugely surprising, then, when two years ago, the series’ protagonist and militant Manolo enthusiast Carrie Bradshaw bade farewell to her somewhat legendary UES brownstone in favour of a new luxury apartment sixty-odd blocks further south down Manhattan.
Throughout most of Sex and the City’s six seasons, Carrie lived in a rent-controlled one-bedroom apartment at 245 East 73rd St, paying a fleeting $700 a month, before moving into a Fifth Avenue apartment referred to as “heaven on Fifth” in the first of the sequel films. For reasons fans of the show will be all too familiar with, by the end of season two of And Just Like That…, Carrie was back in the brownstone, until she decided to up sticks, celebrating with a final dinner party nicknamed “The Last Supper” before making the move to a Greek Revival townhouse in New York’s Gramercy Park.
After two years of waiting, the series’ third season is set to air in the USA on Thursday, 29 May on HBO and Max, and one day later on Sky Comedy and NOW in the UK. It will be the first time viewers are properly exposed to the new house.
Carrie’s new place is at 3 Gramercy Park West, in a large red-brick porticoed townhouse built in 1840 and featuring distinctive exterior iron lacework. It faces onto the private two-acre park, which was laid out by Samuel B. Ruggles in 1831 as Manhattan gradually grew northward. The house features prominently in the trailer for the next series.
Publicity shots for the new season of And Just Like That… show Carrie decorating, unpacking and writing at her desk in the new building – possibly fiction, with the trailer teasing a slight change of career tack for the journalist.
And, happily, Carrie appears to have held onto Shoe, the cat she adopted earlier in And Just Like That…, and who in real life belongs to actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick (Shoe’s real name is Lotus).
Knowing both Sex and the City and And Just Like That…, two programmes which are both extremely fond of sudden and unexpected twists, it might be wise for fans not to get too attached to the house (odds on an episode one house fire, anyone?). But for as long as it can hang on in And Just Like That…’s madcap narrative, 3 Gramercy Park West should provide a suitably luxe backdrop to Carrie’s just-as-luxe life. Perhaps, in a few years, it will be as famous as that brownstone.
