Don't match everything together

For example, I love to use differing fabrics on sofas and chairs in a sitting room. it makes it more fun, it feels a little more authentic and less like a matchy matchy set, which for me is a real no no!

Do add in some antique fabrics

This is such a lovely way to add interest to the room and have something that is unique in there that not everyone recognises… they’re also such fun to source!

Do add in something dark

A dark piece of furniture, a darker fabric, a darker frame on a picture: it hints at something “off” but always seems to work. I always try and do this in schemes, it goes back to not having everything perfect or in line, so that the room feels like it has been built up over time.

Don't be afraid to size up

In smaller spaces it's common to go for smaller items of furniture, rugs etc, but as long as you make sure they fit beforehand, size up! Bigger furniture in a smaller room can add to the sense of scale and can make the space feel larger and more impressive.

Do use wallpaper

It's one of my absolute go tos and has the magic power of transforming a room. Don’t be afraid of using large scales in small spaces or going for a dark paper in a darker room–it can all add to the drama and fun.

Do look at scale when mixing pattern

If you use a small floral print on a cushion you could afford to have a large chunky stripe next to that. You don’t want to have lots of different patterns but all the same size, it becomes boring. Don’t be afraid to mix and layer patterns - its amazing what can work!

Don't try to choose paint colours remotely!

It never works and what looks good in one space could look completely different in another according to the light. You’d be surprised how many people still do, but it's essential to look at the colour in the space you intend to paint and to look at it at various times of the day if you want to see how the colour is affected by the light outside.

Do mix old and new

Reupholster antique chairs in your favourite fabric and pick up furniture at auction; it looks surprisingly contemporary when you place it next to modern pieces.

Don't be afraid to use lots of colour

It's so happy making and breathes personality into a room.
