The colour of your bedroom can vastly alter the mood of the space, whether it's serene sunny white, or rich, moody blue. Pale colours can enhance existing light and space, while bolder colours can create a brightness all of their own and a cosseting, enveloping effect. If you don't want to commit to strong colours on the walls, you can always go for something pale and understated, and warm it up with patterned textiles - curtains, cushions and bedspreads. Jasper Fry1/10For a super-serene bedroom atmosphere, you can't go wrong with a really well-chosen neutral paint colour. Interior designer Rachel Aisling Walker has used Rose Uniacke's ‘Champagne’ for the bedroom of this north London house, pairing it with bed curtains made up in ‘Italian Linen’ in Siena Ivory from Gayle Warwick.
Paul Massey2/10Pale blue is another classic choice for a bedroom, and one of our favourites is Farrow & Ball's ‘Light Blue’, a wonderfully soft colour that can look incredibly elegant in both daylight and by night. Alexandra Tolstoy used it for the bedroom of her London house, making it the gentle background for warm patterned fabrics, including a bed valance is in a Robert Kime fabric.
Paul Whitbread3/10Another classic for a reason, pale pink (think Farrow & Ball's ‘Setting Plaster’ or Edward Bulmer's ‘Jonquil’) makes for a soft backdrop to a bedroom, and it has the advantage of being incredibly flattering. The main bedroom in this Oxford house by Charlotte Boundy has walls in Edward Bulmer's ‘Jonquil’, which is enlivened by tones of blue, such as the headboard in Bennison's ‘Pomegranate’ fabric. The bed is the ‘Colette’ design from Howe, and a vintage Uzbek suzani from Nushka over bed is spread on top. The wall lights are Soane Britain's ‘Reading Wall Light’.

Mark Anthony Fox5/10For a slightly moodier vibe that leans more towards brown, we adore Farrow & Ball's ‘Dead Salmon’, which has been used here by Emma Burns in the panelled bedroom of a Queen Anne house in Hampstead. In the traditional space, this colour makes an excellent backdrop for antique pictures.
Mark Anthony Fox6/10Although we've largely fallen out of love with grey as a paint colour, there is a certain family of grey-green neutrals that we find deeply elegant and very modern in feel. The colour here in the bedroom of designer Christian Bense's apartment is ‘Bone’ by Farrow & Ball, a pleasingly cool colour which makes a great backdrop for wooden antiques and a headboard covered in Harwood Fabrics' ‘Serpent’ in the royal colourway.

Ben Pentreath9/10Olive green paint is seriously having a moment right now, but has always been a favourite with some designers, including Ben Pentreath, who uses what he refers to as ‘the colour of a freshly-laid cow pat’. In the guest bedroom of his former Dorset home, he has used his favourite shade, ‘4-050’ from Papers and Paints, and it's easy to see why he loves it so much.
Paul Massey10/10Yellow is another colour that we're seeing all over the houses on our pages at the moment – and really, what could be nicer than waking up to something the colour of sunshine? Warm, rustic yellows are easiest to work with, but we rather love the acidic green tang of this shade (‘Mustard Blanket’ by Dulux) in Phillip Hooper's Georgian house in Somerset.
