Style File: Emma Sims Hilditch
Emma Sims Hilditch's journey to interior design was somewhat roundabout. As the daughter of an interior designer, she was surrounded by beautiful things all during her childhood; however, before beginning her own journey into the world of design, Emma elected to study business and after that work in film. After many years spent working in the film industry, Emma took the leap into that of design and thus the Sims Hilditch company was born in 2009.
As one of House & Garden's Top 100 Designers, Emma has always championed 'new English country style' both cites and the countryside and finds inspiration everywhere she goes: “I’m always looking at my surroundings for inspiration, be it a beautiful countryside walk for colours, or a smart design hotel for interior architecture,” she says.
Emma's extensive portfolio, which includes projects ranging from the smart Camden loft Emma revived for a longstanding client to a 18th-century Cotswold rectory, shows her commitment to this pared-back, thoughtful and serene aesthetic. Indeed, the latter word is the keynote to Emma's overall aesthetic – a sympathetic reimagining of classic English country-house style that leans towards the quiet and orderly (Emma's own townhouse, with its mix of clean lines and natural textures, too, is a perfect emblem of this aesthetic). There is something very calming about the pale colours and understated patterns that characterise her studio’s work. The layouts are harmonious and considered, and you have the sense there is a place for everything. It is a sensibility she shares with her husband John, co-founder of homeware company Neptune, for which Emma is creative director.
