Why burgundy is having a moment, and how to use it in your interiors
Of the various shades of red you could employ in an interior, burgundy (or oxblood, or garnet) is one of the most appealing. Its depth and relatively subdued redness are suggestive of opulence and comfort, the ideal shade for rooms lit by flickering candlelight. In the vague world of colour psychology, red in general is thought to stimulate conversation, and has thus often been used for dining rooms, but we've gathered examples from around the House & Garden archive to show how versatile the deeper shades of red can be. This example in tech entrepreneur Rose Hulse's Georgian house is painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Eating Room Red’, an elegant colour based on the damasks that were popular in 19th-century dining rooms.
